The 49 Films That Will Define 2011

49) The Rum Diary (Release Date TBC)

The Talent: Bruce Robinson (director), Johnny Depp, Giovanni Ribisi, Amber Heard

The Pitch: Hunter S. Thompson’s semi-autobiographical novel, unpublished for decades, about a freelance journalist going off the rails in Puerto Rico.

The Hook: Anybody who saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas knows that Depp does a mean Hunter Thompson. That he’s doing it with Withnail and I legend Robinson makes this return match all the more exciting.

I went to see it at a screening earlier this week, and it is truly amazing. Would recommend everyone who has the chance to go see it. It is beautifully made, delicately focusing on tender and bright aesthetics in it portrayal of heartfelt humanity. One of the best christmas films to date. (And I’m not just saying that because I’m Norwegian).

Probably a natural consequence of the fact that it seems all I manage to listen to these days is Queen…

I have long claimed “Bohemian Rhapsody” to be my favorite song, and to be the greatest song ever made (at least in the course of the 20th century.) I firmly stand by this, but this morning I started thinking that maybe this is not fair.

Not fair to all other songs and not to the rhapsody in itself. Because isn’t it more than just a song? To give other songs a living chance we simply can’t categorize it with whatever else is out there, because really, when it comes down to it, nothing can compare to the amazeness that is “Bohemian Rhapsody”. <strike>Maybe Pink Floyds “Comfortably Numb”. But just maybe.</strike>

Besides, to call it just a song, seems like too simple a definition for it. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is in a league of its own. And should be treated thus. As a true work of art. Not the kind that belongs in a museum. But the kind that has a life of its own. In the people who loves it and those who have yet to.

Why You Can’t Kill Him: Hitman Chigurh is an unstoppable force of nature. Meticulous, brutal and scarier than Jackie Stallone without make-up, he won’t stop until the job’s done. He’s a human version of the Terminator, completely unstoppable and coldly detached from his work.
